BP II

Space - UNCG utilizes space in a different way than other "large" campuses.  It is big, but compact, therefore creating the illusion that it's in a smaller space. This is very beneficial for UNCG in comparison with campuses such as NCSU, Duke, or VCU where the campus is plotted on a very large space making the campuses feel enormous.

Power - The power of UNCG radiates from College Ave.  This is where 95% of the student population has to walk on at some point during their day.  This is the main portal to get to each building.  College Ave. has many important buildings hugging it's edges such as the EUC, library and Administration building (much of the foundation for this campus).

Experience - Every college student shares a common experience.  Most students are away from home, some away from parents for the very first time.  Each student mixes some studying in with their version of a good time.  Students from different universities can compare these experiences, but when it comes to the basic outline, UNCG students experience things similar to those at a bigger university in a different city.

Principals - Circles : Stacks : Groups.  The buildings that make up the UNCG campus share at least one of the principals that make a successful design.  Most of the buildings have columns which therefore leads to repetition, therefore leading to a harmonious campus.

Precedent - The main precedent set for UNCG was the all woman's college it was before it became co-ed.  The mascot then was Minerva who has become a very important figure and icon for this school.

Site - UNCG is located in Greensboro, North Carolina.  This campus is ideally located because it is not in the downtown area of Greensboro, but it's not part of the rural area either.  UNCG can get the best of both worlds in a very short distance.

Order - Order was carefully taken into mind when laying out the UNCG campus.  For the most part, all of the dormitories are grouped at one end of the campus.  The cafeteria, library, and EUC make a "split-line" between that and all the educational buildings.

Scale - UNCG is considered a "medium-sized" campus.  In Greensboro itself, it definitely dominates the land in comparison to the other colleges that surround it.  Within the campus, all the buildings are around the same scale, except for Club Jackson (Jackson Library) which towers over the entire campus.

Technology - As on any campus, technology is an extremely important part of campus.  In each direction, there is a student jamming out to his/her iPod or talking/texting on their cell phone.  In a less personal scope, UNCG offers wireless internet that is basically a big blanket over the school allowing students to access it where ever they may be.

Material and surface - The majority of buildings on campus are made of red brick and are accented with a series of columns.  In my opinion, the repetition of these materials is what gives this campus it's nostalgic, but modern personality, and makes it beautiful.
